Knocked-Out Tooth Forster

A missing tooth is a nemesis to a dazzling smile. Nobody wants to smile if they are missing a tooth, even more so if it is a front tooth.

Unfortunately, unforeseen circumstances may leave us with a knocked-out tooth. Don’t lose hope if this happens.

At Forster Dental Centre, our emergency services include treating knocked out teeth. We have same day emergency appointments available so we can attend to you as soon as possible.

First Aid Steps

Before we get to the first aid steps, it is important to understand the following:

  • The first 30 minutes are crucial. How you deal with the emergency within these minutes can greatly affect the success of re-implantation.
  • The steps in handling a knocked permanent tooth and baby tooth are different. You can re-insert a permanent tooth on your own. For a baby tooth, only a dentist should re-implant it, otherwise, you may damage the developing permanent tooth underneath.
  • A missing tooth can cause bite problems and speech function difficulties among other issues. Premature shedding of the primary tooth is also harmful since the tooth serves as the guide through which the permanent tooth will erupt.

To deal with a knocked-out tooth here’s what to do:

  • Secure the avulsed tooth. Pick it up by the crown and do not touch the root.
  • If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse it with clean water for no more than 10 seconds. Do not scrape.
  • Reinsert and bite down gently on a piece of cloth to keep it in place.
  • For baby tooth, after securing the tooth, soak it in a bowl of milk, saliva, or saline solution on your way to the dentist.
  • Go to your dentist within 30 minutes of the injury.
